Love Me Not: Valentine’s Day in the KSA

13 02 2010

It’s Valentine’s Day again, and red-colored or heart-shaped items that are legal all other times of the year are being stowed under the counter.  The kingdom which follows strict interpretation of Islam bans celebration of Western holidays such as Valentine’s Day, especially as it is named after a Christian saint.

Most shops in Riyadh have removed all red items from their shelves, and it seems this year the feared religious police are harsher than ever, publishing a warning in Saudi newspapers against violating this crack down on love.  “Those who don’t comply will be punished,” the statement said.

Dating is not socially acceptable in Saudi Arabia, although it is very existent.  It’s very common for unmarried couples to meet up at cafe’s and restaurants that have partitions to hide them from the public. With everyone having access to mobiles and internet, the dating scene is becoming even greater.  It almost a rarity to know someone who  is not in a relationship.

Many Saudis who want to celebrate with gifts of red flowers, hear-shaped chocolate, red clothing, teddy bears, or other romantic things do their shopping way in advance to the holiday or resort to the black market. Those who are determined can always find a way to get around these absurd regulations.

In my opinion, this is all ridiculous.  It’s time the conservatives stop fighting this meaningless battle against valentine’s day. They need realize that they will never be able to change people’s minds or prevent them from expressing how they feel. I hope that everyone will make an extra effort to enjoy their day tomorrow to prove a point: where there is a will, there is a way. Make it a game to see how many red roses you can get your hands on tomorrow! A gift that took a little illegal effort to get  is a bit more romantic. Is it not?
